Lake Guinas is the larger of only two natural lakes in Namibia. It is a sinkhole lake, created by a collapsing karst cave located 32 km north of Tsumeb near the D3043 road.

The word “Otjikoto” is an Otjiherero word meaning “deep hole”. The lake was part of an underground river system and nobody was aware of its existence until the roof of dolomite cave fell in.

The park has five rest camps namely Namutoni, Okaukuejo, Halali, Dolomite and Onkoshi. Etosha was the first park to be announced in Namibia and it covers an area of 22 270km². The first records of Etosha were those of Frances Galton and Charles Andersson in 1851. The large number of game caught the attention of hunters and traders and steps were taken to protect wildlife from 1892. Today Etosha is a newly renovated, well preserved part of a beautiful country. There are 114 species of large and small animals, 340 bird species and 86 waterholes, springs and fountains where you can view wildlife.
The majority of Etosha‘s electricity needs are supplied through solar energy.

On 9 July 1915 a surrender agreement was signed here between General Louis Botha (Commander of the Union forces), Dr Seits (Governor of South West Africa) and Colonel Victor Franke (Commander of the German forces in South West Africa). The treaty is often referred to as the Khorab treaty but it is here in Otavi that the agreement was signed.

The town offers hotels, lodges, campsites, supermarkets, health care, fuel stations and wholesalers. In Oshakati is the Omatala open market with a variety of goods on sale.
In Ondangwa there are British graves and the grave of King Shikongo. There is also an open market and crafts centre. The two towns have a typical village life with kuka shops, barbers and shebeens.

Olukonda lies in the Oshikoto region. The Nakambale museum is located in a renovated Finish mission station. The museum was declared a national monument in 1992. It contains photos, transcripts and exhibitions of the growth of the Finish and Rheinische mission and the history of Ovamboland. The Nakambale Museum was built in 1889 as a church by Marti Rautanen who was a Finnish missionary.

Attractions in this area include King Shikongo grave, Sir Howard’s baobab, German war graves, King Taapopi’s residence and the Ongulumbashe monument. Visits to the Ongulumbashe monument should be arranged with the SWAPO party office in Outapi.

The town lies in the Ohangwena region. There is only one primary school and no medical facilities. Some people in this area sustain a living by farming and trading. There are supermarkets and fresh produce suppliers.

The Epupa Falls lies in the Kunene River. The river has a width of 500 and drops 60m over a distance of 1.5km. The highest drop in the river is 37km. The waterfall amidst an otherwise arid area is a spectacular sight. Accommodation is available as tented camps, bungalows, campsites with full services and restaurant, bar and swimming pool. Guests can engage in bird watching, canoeing, hiking and a visit to the Himba tribe.

Opuwo is the administrative centre of the Kavango region. It offers a hospital, church, fuel stations, restaurants, hotel, lodges and a tented camp with en-suite facilities. There is also a street market and well-stocked shops. Various crafts are on offer at the street market. Guided or self-drive trips to the Epupa falls and nearby Himba village are on the itinerary here. Luxurious dwellings in the isolated countryside, campsites with full amenities and a rest camp are available.

The Dorslandtrekkers (Boers from South Africa on the Thirstlandtrek) passed this ford over 100 years ago on their return from southern Angola. A memorial lies south of Swartbooisdrift to honor the suffering of the Dorslandtrekkers.
Campsites with full amenities await the visitor. Other places of interest are the Ehomba Mountains and ruins.

At Kaoko Otavi a spring and ruins are places of interest. Campsites await the visitor.
West of Kaoko Otavi lays Orupembe. It is known as the place of wide open spaces and on visiting the area you will have the pleasure of undisturbed countryside, abundant wildlife and Himba communities. You can also visit the Hoarusib River, Purros and Himba settlement. At Hoarusib desert elephants roam as well as ostrich, springbok, oryx and mountain zebra

There are seven traditional kingdoms that exist in northern Namibia and the earlier home of one of these kings is open to visitors. Guides will take you on a one hour tour explaining the custom, history and principles. When tours are booked in advance you can enjoy traditional dishes and dances. A little shop offers crafts characteristic of this tribe.

The scenery consists of scattered rocks and floodplains, gorges, dry riverbeds, rock structures, and sandbanks. Vegetation is sparse so there are no large herds of animals, there are however elephant, springbok, gemsbok and more to be seen. Accommodation is available as campsites with ablution facilities, comfortable rooms, with a dining area, pool and some with a curio shop. Safari’s exploring north-western Namibia includes vehicles, guides, camping equipment and meals.
