The beautiful organ pipes are a fascinating geological formation located near Twyfelfontein. Strikingly rich rusty colors are portrayed in long columns resembling those of a church organ, some rising up to 5m high.

Burnt Mountain is in a south-easterly direction from Twyfelfontein and is really a hill at the foot of a 12km long volcanic ridge. Nothing grows in this rather desolate area.

Situated along the central coast of Namibia is Dune 7, the highest dune in the coastal dune belt, situated 10km outside the town of Walvis Bay. The local municipality has planted palm trees and erected toilets and barbeque sites, fresh water is also available, it is the only man-made oasis in the dune belt.

The town was established around a waterhole and surrounding 200square km which Eduard Hälbich bought from a Herero chief.
Of interest are the bakery (formerly Hotel Zum Grunen Kranz) built 1903 for Heinrich Hedeler and in 1950 converted to a bakery. It was declared a national monument 15 May 1986.
The Woll house was built 1900 for Georg Woll and used as shop and living quarters. In later years it was used as school and hostel. It was declared a national monument in May 1986 and is used as a residence today.
The Rösemann Building also a former hotel was built around 1898 when Rösemann and Kronewitter set up their shop. In later years it was sold several times, declared a national monument 20 December 1979, renovated and enlarged in 1996 and today it is occupied by a bank.

The locomotive (no.40) in front of the station was built in 1912 and is one of three Henschel heavy-duty locomotives from Henschel and Son in Casel, Germany. No. 41 can be seen in front of Otjiwarongo railway station. Near the offices of the municipality is a memorial stone for fallen soldiers. Some old buildings, the Pallisandro mine and a big Quiver tree complete the sightseeing path in and around Usakos.

The town has a coffee shop, curio shops and supermarkets, self-catering accommodation, camping and swimming pool, restaurant, bed and breakfast establishments. Excursions can be undertaken to the Spitzkoppe, Moonlandscape and Erongo mountains.

Arandis has a population of about 6500. The town lies approximately 60km from Swakopmund and has accommodation for tourists. Sporting activities, restaurants and sightseeing are available in a peaceful town. The town will soon benefit from the thriving uranium market. Investors were encouraged to provide new opportunities to the community. A development program will soon bring 26 new establishments to Arandis. Dantago is a clothing manufacturer employing 265 Namibians.

The mine lies in the desert some 65km from Swakopmund. Uranium was discovered in 1920 by Captain Peter Louw. After various surveys, full production was only reached in 1978.

In 1870 Axel Eriksson, a Swedish trader and hunter, began to use Omaruru as a centre for his trading activities. Later that year a mission station started here. Omaruru is the Herero word for ‘bitter thick-milk’ as the animals often graze on the bitter bush and therefore produces meat and milk with a bitter taste. The Franketurm, old battlefield and mission house are of particular interest. The tower was erected in honor of Captain Victor Franke in 1908 and declared a national monument in 1963. Captain Franke and his soldiers had various victories against the Bondelswarts at Gibeon and the Herero at Omaruru and Okahandja. He received the highest German military honor, the Pour le Mérite, for his achievements.

The Kalk Kegel (limestone skittle) has a height of 35m and a circumference of 44m. It is estimated to be 15 million years old and from the same era as the Kuiseb and Sesriem conglomerates. Earlier river deposits were eroded to leave the Vingerklip as its remains.

Khorixas is the Khoekhoen name for a tree with edible berries. The settlement has fuel stations, general stores, a bank and guest farms with camping facilities.

The Cordaites trees were deposited here some 260 millions years ago by a river of water. This theory is supported by the fact that no branches or roots are evident on the trees. The tree trunks were fossilized and today the bark grain and tree rings can be easily seen.

Different layers of shale, sandstone and mudstone give this mountain unique color in morning and afternoon light. Millions of years ago the organic material trapped under deposits of sand came into contact with a rupture of magma and this created the black compressed rock. The latter giving this mountain a burnt appearance.

The name is derived from the wondrous colors of the mountain as if it seems to be burning. Magma intrusions some 120 million years ago formed the Brandberg massif and the Messum crater. The Brandberg is granite rock containing feldspar giving the mountain a pink color which glows red at sunrise/ sunset.

Translated it means six fountains. This small settlement is a photogenic area with a relaxed village life. The old German fort was erected to serve as a control post to restrict movement of livestock after a severe outbreak of rinderpest in 1896. The fort was later abandoned and in 1995 converted into a lodge.

This town developed around the mining activities from the early 1900’s. Uis had a hard rock tin mine with the largest known tin deposit in the world, but it closed down in 1990. Today tin is mined on a very small scale. You can see the old mine dump as you enter the town.
Namclay uses clay sand left from previous mining activities to produce clay bricks. As much as 40 000 bricks are produced per day. At the current rate of production the amount of clay sand available is sufficient to last for 105 years. The company employs 53 people.
